Tūmai Beach - Coastal Habitat Restoration

Here at this site adjacent to the Pleasant River Estuary (Te Hakapupu) the Tūmai Beach Restoration Trust have planted more than 23,500 native seedlings since 2009, with a goal to plant 97,000 seedlings in total.

In 2022 we helped residents to plant 13,000 seedlings with support from Trees That Count as one of fifteen of their QEII jubilee planting sites and from Rotary/MPI through their “forests of peace and remembrance” fund. The Tūmai Beach group plan to plant another 5,000 seedlings here in 2023.

“This space isn’t just about carbon locking, but sustaining life other than our own. Birdsong or the dawn chorus is a goal for Tūmai, along with improving the immediate body of water.” Said former All Black Kees Meeuws from the Tūmai Beach Restoration Trust.
